Auction Spotlight: 1937 Dragones de Ciudad Trujillo Signed Team Sheet
This sheet realized $34,220 on March 27, 2024 — landing within its $30,000–$50,000 pre-sale estimate range, a strong result reflecting the rarity of team-wide Hall of Fame autographs from this legendary roster.
A Team Built by a Dictator, Powered by Negro League Legends
Put together by Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo, the 1937 Dragones de Ciudad Trujillo are regarded as one of the best baseball teams ever assembled. The roster included multiple future Hall of Famers, among them Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and James “Cool Papa” Bell.
Major league stars were difficult to lure to the Dominican Republic at the time. So Trujillo turned to the Negro Leagues instead, recruiting the best talent available. He needed a championship team, and he needed it fast, amid serious political turmoil in the country.
A Sheet Signed by Seven Members of the 1937 Dragones
A piece of this historic team was featured in our March 2024 Sports Card & Memorabilia auction: a sheet signed by seven members of the 1937 Dragones baseball team, which carried a pre-sale estimate of $30,000 to $50,000 and ultimately sold for $34,220.
Authenticated by JSA, the sheet features the signatures of Hall of Famers Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, and James “Cool Papa” Bell. It’s also signed by four other players from the team: Robert Griffith, Harry Williams, Leroy Matlock, and Sammy Bankhead, rounding out a genuinely rare, team-wide autograph grouping from a single legendary season.
Why the 1937 Dragones Still Matter to Collectors
The 1937 Dragones de Ciudad Trujillo season is one of the most famous stories in Negro Leagues history. Facing pressure to win at almost any cost, Trujillo assembled a roster that, on paper, rivaled anything fielded in the segregated major leagues of the era. For collectors, that makes authenticated, team-signed material from this specific season exceptionally scarce. Items connecting multiple Hall of Famers to one unified piece of history, rather than a single autograph on its own, rarely come to market.
