Ruth Handler, creator of Barbie, encountered Bild Lilli on a trip to Europe and used her as the direct model for Barbie’s design. What is the buyer’s premium for this auction?
Weiss Auctions charges a 15% buyer’s premium on in-house bids, meaning absentee bids left directly with us prior to the sale or phone bids placed through our staff, and 18% on bids placed online, whether through pre-bidding or live bidding on auction day. The online rate is reduced to 16% when payment is received within 10 business days by cash, money order, or certified check.

Bild Lilli was a German fashion doll produced in West Germany from 1955 to 1964, originally sold as an adult novelty item. She directly inspired the creation of Barbie after Ruth Handler, Barbie’s creator, encountered Lilli on a trip to Europe. Original Bild Lilli dolls are significantly rarer than early Barbie and are highly sought after by both Barbie historians and antique doll collectors.
