A True Rookie-Era Ty Cobb Rarity — One of the Toughest Early Detroit Tigers Issues
We just got in something we don’t see very often — a 1907 Wolverine News Company Detroit Tigers Ty Cobb “Batting” postcard, graded PSA 1. Even in low grade, this is a truly scarce, early Cobb piece, and it checks a lot of boxes for collectors: early date and an iconic subject.

What is the Wolverine News Detroit Tigers Postcard Set?
In 1907, the Wolverine News Company of Detroit issued a postcard set celebrating the Detroit Tigers and their 1907 World Series appearance. At the time, these cards were not mass produced like later issues.
As a result, most surviving examples show real-life handling and display, some even mailed with writing and postage.
Why the Wolverine Ty Cobb Postcard is Important
Many collectors consider this issue to be one of Cobb’s true rookie-era cards, and it’s easy to see why. It’s early, it features a great image, and it predates a lot of the more commonly discussed national issues such as his iconic T-206.
Just How Rare Is It?
This example is graded PSA 1, and even at that level it’s a seriously rare card. According to the PSA population report:
- Only 2 graded examples at PSA 1
- Only 7 graded higher
- Only 12 total graded by PSA
A True Estate Find, New to the Hobby
This card is a true fresh-to-market discovery from a West Coast estate. The Cobb, along with nearly 20 other early postcards, had been hung on the walls of a collector’s house in the early 20th century and stayed there for decades.
The pin holes are part of the card’s story and line up with exactly how the owner displayed his collection. Finds like this don’t come around often.
